Suspect CO?

If the presence of CO is indicated by an alarm or any of the danger signs listed here, then take action immediately:

• Evacuate the affected area, moving yourself and others into fresh air.
• Seek medical assistance if required: Go to your GP or call 111 for the NHS non-emergency contact line, which is available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. If the situation is urgent and numerous people have been affected, call 999 for an ambulance and the fire brigade.
• Ventilate the affected area by opening all doors and windows.
• If possible, shut off the gas supply or appliances: call Gas Emergency Service (24 hours) on 0800 111 999.

• If the structure is a rental property, contact the landlord.

Before going back into the property, do the following:

• Consult a Gas Safe Registered Engineer or an appropriate fuel source engineer to identify the source of CO and make the necessary repairs.
• Place a CO alarm in the house.
• Have a qualified engineer using an FGA safety-check all appliances before using them again.

Note: CO can penetrate walls, so if your appliances have been checked but the alarm still sounds, check the neighbouring properties or central heating sources.
